Congratulations to the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) for their exultant Sydney Concert on Sunday 17 July at the Sydney Opera House. Under the inspired baton of Sit Mark Elder, fresh from his triumph at Glyndebourne where he presided over a sublime Billy Budd, the AYO sparked through Amphitheatre by Brett Dean, (with mezzo soprano, Ekaterina Gubanova) nailed selections from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and created a thrilling Shostakovich Symphony No. 10!
A group of Society members found themselves together in the ‘Royal Box’ to share this exhilarating night. A hearty ‘well done’ to the members of the AYO, Sir Mark Elder, AYO CEO, Colin Cornish and Mary Vallentine and her Board.
We wish the AYO well on their international tour which started on 17 July in Canberra. The AYO will hold concerts in Sydney, Shanghai, Tianjin, Beijing, Copenhagen, London (at the Royal Albert Hall), Harrogate and Amsterdam (at the Concertgebouw).

Tribute to Sir Charles Mackerras
Sir Mark Elder preceded the concert with a poignant tribute to his friend and colleague Sir Charles Mackerras who conducted Così fan tutte during the Glyndebourne Festival only last month. Sir Mark noted that he and Sir Charles met in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House at the time of its opening in 1973.
