The outstanding conductor Sir Charles Mackerras has died in London at the age of 84 after a fight with cancer. The Wagner Society in NSW Inc mourns the loss of this great musician and long standing Patron of the Society.
From the Australian opera Website:
'Between 1981 and 1985 he conducted concert performances of Wagner’s Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung and Tristan und Isolde in co-presentations between Australian Opera, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His memorable performances of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg during the 1988 Bicentennial season live on in the memory and on a remarkable DVD recording of the production.’
