Talk by Neil Armfield AO Looking Forward: The Once and Future Ring

Neil Armfield AO is a director of theatre, film and opera. He graduated from the University of Sydney with First Class Honours in English in 1977 and was appointed Co-Artistic Director of Nimrod Theatre Company in 1979. After a stint with Adelaide’s Lighthouse Theatre he joined the group purchasing Belvoir St Theatre and was first Artistic Director of Company B between 1994.and 2010. He has produced a number of prize-winning productions many of which have travelled internationally, including Diary of a Madman, The Tempest, Cloudstreet and The Secret River. Later in 2015 he will direct King Lear with his long-time collaborator Geoffrey Rush for the STC. His film Holding the Man has premiered this year at a number of Film Festivals. He will become co Director of the Adelaide Festival in 2017.
He has had an extensive career as an Opera Director, beginning with series of Janacek and Britten operas for Opera Austalia, Many productions have been picked up by companies such as the Welsh National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Canadian Opera Company. His Tristan and Isolde for Opera Australia was widely praised. In 2013 he directed OA’s first complete Der Ring das Nibelungen, which won Helpmann Awards for Best Opera and Best Director. Neil spoke to the Wagner Society before that production and now returns to speak to us before the revival in Melbourne in November 2016.
